The majority of us working folk are stuck working in a cubicle. Cubicles are about as inviting as a proctologist's exam room. Until we're lucky enough to move up in the work force and get a huge office complete with an executive desk chair and lounge sofa, we have to make due with the tiny cell we are given. Decorations can actually improve your mood and make you more productive, plus staring at a gray wall all day can be very bleak and depressing. Here are some great ideas to decorate your cubicle without going overboard.
It's important to keep in mind that your office space still needs to be professional and not look like you just walked into a college dorm room. Master the art of restraint and keep it to a minimum. If you continually have clients in your cubicle, this is all the more reason to limit yourself and be conservative. Start with something simple like a small plant. Be sure to choose one that will survive with indoor low-lighting and doesn't require too much attention. A dead plant will not boost your morale. Stick with fake plants if you lack a green thumb. A few pictures of family and friends is also a perfect idea - nothing inappropriate of course. When hanging up pictures and posters, don't allow the cubicle to turn into an art gallery.
Corner Office Desks
The idea behind decorating the cubicle is to make it feel a bit like home. Bring in a little nick-knack, a paper weight, or your favorite mug. A desk calendar of your favorite hobby can show off your personality and help you remember that today is Tuesday, not Wednesday. Put up some inspirational quotes to keep you motivated throughout the day. A few simple things is great but don't overcrowd your desk and bring in items that will distract you from your work. New employees should take a look at what others have so you can stay within the company's guidelines.
The holidays are a perfect time to make a few changes in your dcor and I'm sure you'll appreciate them. Mini pumpkins will usher in the fall season. A winter snow globe will remind you how warm and cozy it is in the office. Making some minor changes each season will keep your space lively and fresh.
If you're not allowed to decorate, change your desktop background to a soothing image or bring in a colorful mousepad. A candy dish will make you the new office favorite, but don't snack on it all day. Another acceptable idea is to bring in some lighting. A new desk lamp can brighten your day, both physically and mentally. Remember, you don't have to be an executive to enjoy the wonderful pleasure of sitting in a comfortable executive desk chair. See if you can replace yours.
You spend over 2,000 hours a year sitting at your desk. Bring a little more joy to your day and maybe you'll get that corner office with the Lafer recliner and lounge sofa. Then your office will really become your home away from home.
